How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?

Anthony Rudine -- Well, how things can change in a week's time. I had been debating which topic to discuss for a couple of days now. Should I discuss Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick's Olympic demeanor and relate it to medicine "off the ice?" Then I thought about discussing what Jim Collins, a management expert, calls "The Hedgehog Concept," where a company defines its passion and core concept, which I could easily relate back to medicine.

But as I woke up yesterday, my girlfriend of over 2 years decided to end things with me. I understand all of the reasons, and I won't get into them here other than to say it was somewhat of a surprise and was one of the few times I have produced a tear.

So, to be totally honest, I really didn't feel like writing anything after that. Maybe we shall talk about The Hedgehog Concept at a later date, as right now I am feeling more like a hermit. So, with the advice Tom Hanks offered to Barry Pepper in The Green Mile - "Dry your face, Dean, before you turn around" - I shall, because it's time for hospital rounds and I have a patient to see.

I'm sorry you got surprised with the breakup. I can see you are mature if you were able to make rounds shortly after that. You will be a fine catch for a special young woman. It'll get better. Stay positive.

Sorry to hear that.. As to mending a broken heart, you can't.. Time will heal it for you.. yet, the memories still remain.. "Grin and bear it." One of the pitfalls in medicine is not being able to mope around all day after a break up.. We have to be able to disregard our own feelings, our personal problems, and everything personal really. I always say we have a patient-first-before-self policy. Wish you're feeling more like yourself now..(",)

Aaaah! My dear Anthony. First, I have to praise your courage to talk about this on the blog. This shows that you are strong enough to face the situation (good prognostic sign). For the med student who hasn’t got the time for himself, not being able to keep a relationship going, is not a surprise. So you better get use to it.
Having this in mind, go with my old motto: “blame it on med school” and the cause becomes the remedy. Indulge yourself in the joy of learning and working with the patients and before you even realize you’ll have this all behind you and will be involved in a whole new relationship.
So good luck my friend.

Hi Anthony

You are so right 'change' happens when you least expect it. Sorry to hear about your breakup. Once you get over the shock & pain you'll need some major nurturing. I think it took great courage to share your feelings as so often we don't know how. And it makes us a little crazy. You should celebrate this ability . In time you will realise that it dosen't matter what she has done to you.... let go of it.... it will only hurt you otherwise. Luckily , living life fully dosen't appear to be a problem for you. So get out there and create some magical moments with someone else. Good luck
