Goodbye First Year, Hello Second!

Kendracampbell472x722Kendra Campbell -- I did it. I really did it. I just took the last exam of my first year of med school. I really feel like I accomplished something huge. Unless I totally failed that exam, I’ll be starting the second year of med school in just a few weeks.

First year was definitely not a breeze. Since I had been out of school for so long, it really took me some time to get into the fast paced studying groove of med school. But after the first few months, I just sort of sailed through. I can’t fathom right now the amount of information that I had to master to make it through the first year.

I’m so glad that I’ll finally have new subjects to learn. In my second year of school, I’ll be taking pathology, microbiology & immunology, pharmacology, behavioral science, and an introduction to clinical medicine class. I’ll finally be learning more of the meat of being a doctor. I’m totally psyched about getting to interact with real (and fake) patients, and learning more about the clinical aspects of medicine.

On my way home from taking my final exam, I actually started crying. I’m so incredibly happy that I’m making my way through the seemingly endless corridor of medical school education. I’ve wanted to be a physician for so long, and I’m finally on my way to becoming one. It’s a little scary thinking of how very far I still have to go, and when I start thinking about all the exams I still have yet to pass, I’m a little intimidated. But I made it this far, and I have faith that I can accomplish anything if I give it all I’ve got.

So, farewell first year of med school, and hello second year! Cheers!

Hello Kendra:

I'm a canadian student accepted into Ross medical to start this fall after graduation. I will be graduating with hounrs in molecular biology and biochem. my GPA is sitting at 3.6.

I have been reading your blogs and the valuable information you have been provided to future students of Ross.......congrads on finishing fist year!.

My question: a guy like me with my background would the first/second year courses be still a problem?????.

Your feedback is appreaciated.

Best regards,

Alex

Wow! Congratulations, Kendra! I remember that feeling! I'm basically at the end of my 4th year (1 more exam to go tomorrow)--I'm studying in mexico, so we have 5 years before internship. I remember being so glad that I'd finished first year! Moving up to 3rd year was even better because I FINALLY felt as if I was getting somewhere! Now, I'm looking at 1 more year before internship, and I'm STOKED!!!

You go, girl! You can do it! The time WILL go by quickly!

Hi Kendra! It´s amazing how much alike our curriculums are in our med schools. I´m 3rd year student in Finland (Scandinavia, Northern Europe, between Sweden and Russia) and our second year included the same subjects as yours will... :) In the first year we studied anatomy, chemisty, biochemistry etc.

Hello everyone out there!! Boy I wish I could type and read fast because I have a lot to say and learn from all of you. I am a naturopathic medical doctor......................................
I was previously trained as a biomedical scientist and I have a very strong athletic background with emphasis on the asian fighting arts (Shanghai, China). All this knowledge coupled with my own research has me asking one question which I think can be provoking to some who consider themselves to be overweight. The question is this: Has anyone seen research on the effects of chronic fear (of anything) and it's role/implications with overweight in some individuals?

Congratz on your journey to the second year. Well. it feel so great leaving the first year. You will be having a junior then. Haha. That's the best part.

The worse part in second year is, it is lot tougher than the first year. Be prepare and don't forget what ayou learn in first year. :-P

hi to all incoming 2nd year med students!! i would just like to congratulate everyone for passing a mind-stretching and brain-convoluting year in med school. here we are again, moving on to the next level...Cheers to everyone:)

I'm also a student from the Phil. We share the same curriculum. Actually I'm anxiously excited about all the subjects we'll be taking this year, especially microbiology, which is my favorite, during my pre-med course. But what I feared most is Pharma... I heard its quite difficult though...

It's just great to know that we're nearly close( but not quite) in becoming a real doctor. God bless to all and good Luck to everyone:)

Hi kendra.. u n me is just the same..i've made my way to second year too..but my curiculum is quite different from yours..i'm studying medicine in national university of malaysia..our curiculum is integrated..all the subjects are combined into one module..
giv u example..for blood n lymph module> i learn about the phisiology of blood, pathology that occur in blood and the blood parasite such as malaria..
so i read a lot of books for only one module..waht do you think of my curiculum?? Is it effective??

your reply is appreciated.
